Mahjong Ways 2 (PG Soft): How the Game Works

Mahjong Ways 2 is a PG Soft video slot built on mahjong tiles, with 2,000 ways to win and cascading reels. What sets it apart is a multiplier that climbs with every cascade in a single spin, and gold tiles that turn into wilds after they win. In free spins that multiplier ladder runs from x2 up to x10.

It is the sequel to the first Mahjong Ways, and the two are often mixed up. The easiest way to tell them apart: the original has 1,024 ways, this one has 2,000.

RTP is a long-run average over a very large number of spins. It does not tell you what will happen in one session.

How a spin works

The grid has five reels. Reels 1 and 5 show four symbols. Reels 2, 3 and 4 show five, because each of them has one extra row. Multiply it out (4 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 4) and you get the 2,000 ways.

A win needs matching symbols on neighbouring reels, starting from the left. The position on each reel does not matter. When you win, the winning tiles clear and new ones drop in from above. If the new tiles make another win, the spin keeps going. This is one "round" after another inside the same spin, and it stops when a cascade produces no win.

The features, in plain words

Multiplier ladder. Every spin starts at x1, shown above the reels. A win in the first round moves the next round to x2. A win in the second round moves it to x3. A win in the third round moves it to x5, and it stays at x5 for any later rounds in that spin. The next spin starts again at x1.

Gold tiles. On reels 2, 3 and 4, some tiles can land in gold. Wilds and Scatters never do. If a gold tile is part of a win, it does not just disappear. After the cascade, it comes back as a Wild. That new Wild can then help the next round, which is where long chains come from.

Wild. The Wild stands in for every symbol except the Scatter.

Free spins. Three Scatters anywhere on the reels start 10 free spins. Each Scatter beyond three adds 2 more. Two things change during free spins. First, every tile on reel 3 (except Wilds and Scatters) lands in gold, so Wilds show up more often in the middle. Second, the multiplier ladder is doubled: x2, x4, x6, then x10. Free spins can be retriggered.

According to PG Soft's game sheet, about 26.56% of the 96.95% RTP comes from the free spins feature, and 70.39% from the main game. So most of the return is paid out in normal spins, while free spins carry a large share of the bigger wins.

Practical notes before you play

  • Know how your bet is built. Total bet = bet size x bet level x 20 (the base bet). PG Soft quotes a default range of 0.20 to 50 (in EUR); the steps you see in the game follow your account currency.
  • Pick a stake you can hold for a while. PG Soft rates the game medium volatility. Its sheet puts a win of some size on about 29.9% of spins, but most of those are small, and the free spins trigger far less often (a 0.46% hit rate in the provider's figures). A small bet gives you more spins to see the features.
  • Use the Auto Spin limits. Auto Spin can stop by itself if your balance drops by an amount you set, rises by an amount you set, or a single win passes a value you set. Set the loss limit before you start.
  • Check History. The History button shows every past round with dates, handy if a result looks odd.
  • Ignore "patterns". Each spin is decided by a random number generator. No time of day, spin count or "pola" changes the odds.
